Your system plan

One page that holds your method, its place, what stays out, who does which task, and what you will review. Seeded from your setup; everything you type stays in this browser.

For a first pass, the plan is essential: Choose your system asks you to write one method on it, and every later chapter adds a line. The rules checklist is useful for anyone who rents, lives under an association or has animals nearby, and can wait for everyone else.

The plan

Fill each line in your own words. Write "to decide" where you have not decided; a blank line reads as forgotten.

Rules and questions checklist

Tick each item when you have done it, and write the date and what you were told. Items that do not apply to you can stay unticked; the box above says which apply.

How to use this sheet

  • One plan per household. If you run two methods, write both on the methods line and give each its own place on the "Where each one sits" line.
  • Decisions here, observations elsewhere. The plan records what you decided and why. What the bin did goes in the logs; what you measured goes in the scrap log.
  • Review on a date. Write a month and year in the review line. Your compost system walks through the review.
Fictional example

Tomás Reyes (a fictional person) fills the first lines like this. Methods chosen, and why: "Enclosed bin, add and cover. Small yard, low attention, rented." Where: "Back corner, at least 6 feet from the house." Permission: "Landlord decides. Asked in writing; the answer was yes, with the six-foot condition and emptied before I move out." Elsewhere: "Meat, fish and dairy go in the trash." Review on: a month and year, chosen by him. The lines name decisions and the people who made them.

Limits

The plan records your decisions and what other people told you. It is not a permit, a lease term or an agreement with your landlord, association or city; where someone else decides, their written answer is the record that counts, and the plan only says you asked.
